Lesson 5, The Story of Everything, Quest Men's Bible Study
Culture is worse and better than we might think. Culture is easily used as a weapon against God’s glory or an occasion for idolatry. But it was designed to image God and give Him glory. This unit will consider the good and bad of culture and give us a vision for engaging culture to the glory of God.
Join us at 7:00am in the Parlor at Colonial Baptist Church. (Come little early for coffee and a light breakfast.)
Do you have a health risk related to COVID-19? You can participate via Zoom using THIS LINK.
Immediately following the large group, we break into discussion / prayer groups. If you are not yet in a group, contact Scott Wylie.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS FOLLOWING THE LESSON
The opportunity to leverage advances in technology and culture for selfishness exists still today. Sin is always crouching at the door of our cultural advances. The same tools that build can kill. Because of common grace, we have a great capacity for great things, whether or not you’re a Christian. Because of the sin we’ve inherited from Adam and because of the curse, we have a great capacity for terrible things, Christians and non-Christians alike. What are some additional examples of tools that can be used either for good or evil?
The shift from godly culture to idolatry is easy for sinners. Read Isaiah 44:12-17. What are some ways people turn God’s good gifts into ‘idols’ today?
Should we abandon “the culture” altogether? That would be impossible and unprofitable. Athletics, architecture, art, and industry all contribute something valuable to human existence, as God intended. What are some ways that people try to avoid participating in culture?
Creativity, of whatever variety, can reflect God’s glory. God did not make us or the world because He needed us; He wanted to exult in His own artistry, to express Himself, to tell a story. When we are creative, we are getting as close as mortals can get to creation ex nihilo (ex knee-hee-low), out of nothing. Do you consider yourself creative? What are some alternative ways people can be creative?
There are different ways to use art poorly. Many use their creativity to exploit or blaspheme, but others make their art shallow or stupid. Christian artists should adorn truth with beauty and thoughtfulness. The heavens declare the glory of God not because you can read Bible verses in the clouds (Ps 19). Read Psalm 139:14. How does excellence in our creativity help to reflect the glory of God?
We participate in culture to reflect the beauty of Jesus, to honor Him and give Him glory. We show how all things—work, art, recreation, science, etc.—exist to magnify the King over them all. What are some practical ways that you can participate in culture to the glory of God?
